  • Remington 1911 r1 s review

This is my first review of any gun I have ever owned.

Please bear with me. Last year I was looking to pick up my first 1911. Having owned several 9mm and 38 handguns before I was getting tired and bored with shooting the same thing over and over. My search brought me to the Remington 1911 r1 s. My preference is a stainless steel gun hence the "s" model.

I went to collector arms I Rockland County and looked at several 1911 models from several manufacturers. The owner worked with me lining up the guns and taking the time to answer any questions I had no matter how stupid or repetitive they were. Finally after about an hour and a half he asked me what I thought of the guns. I gave him my opinions and pretty much told him what I wanted to spend and where I was going with the purchase. Very patient and nice he pretty much explained that no matter what I bought the 1911 was like the AR. Almost everything was upgradable and with basic gunsmith knowledge could be done by me. Then he took the guns in my price point and said if I had to make my decision right now what would I pick. After about 2 minutes I pointed to the R1. He then put the other guns away and handed me the paperwork. 10 minutes for the paperwork and a 5 minute NICS check and he told me to enjoy my new toy.

The next day after work I broke it down and gave it a good cleaning. 2 days later time to shoot it. My father and I headed to the range and decided to put some holes in paper.

My first impression after the first round was that it was so nice to shoot a handgun without a 12 lb trigger pull. My second impression was that I didn't do a good enough cleaning. So on the bench I cleared the weapon and broke it down for a quick touch up. After that I put about 300 rounds down range. The gun was tight in the slide but there was a little wiggle when firing it when it cycled.

Being the people person that I am I approached another guy on the line with a much more sophisticated 1911 and told him my issue. He looked at the gun and then suggested a full length guide rod but only after I shot the gun a lot more.

Here is the gun when I bought it.

Since the first day I put about another 800 rounds through it and bought a full length guide rod and installed it. That tightened up the play I was feeling with the recoil. I have also done a trigger job and put a wilson combat match trigger in. For aesthetics I put a blued extended slide release and a blued extended safety lever on it. Next is a match hammer job and a fiber optic front sight (maybe) . The gun is a solid gun. 230 gr Winchester and remington factory loads are what I am shooting through it. And it eats them with no problems until the feed ramp needs a quick cleaning. All in all a great first 1911 for a first time 1911 buyer.

      Nice review. Thanks for posting.

Would you recommend the factory Remington 1911 R1 S to someone looking for a 1911 format but has no gunsmith abilities?

Absolutely. Great gun. Great price range. Plus there are usually a rebate from the factory on it as well.

How do you pick a gun out from a shop in Rockland and have it home and shooting the next day?? Man you got some magic "blue" abilities?

So when are you going to join me for some range time? My clubs indoor range is open 24/7/365. No excuses

It's interesting that you note that it fires fine "until the feed ramp needs some cleaning". I had terrible feed issues with my first R1 S. I ended up sending it back to Remington twice. The first time they did some work on it, but it still had the same problems. They ended up replacing the gun for me. I haven't had any problems since, but I also haven't shot it much.

How do you like the Wilson Combat trigger? Maybe if I spruced mine up a bit I would get excited about shooting it again.

Hey there SW, nice to see you again! I was going to mention the problems you had with yours but thought you were lost forever... Anyway, glad to see you chiming in. Miss you.

LOL, I see my post from earlier never posted. No surprise there. The cliff notes version, Thanks for the write-up Brendon and good luck with the gun. MS, you should also check out the Ruger. I believe similar price point. I've got one and haven't had any problems.

Russ as soon as I get a moment from the divorce issues.

SW after about 200 rounds I had a feed problem. But a quick clean up of the feed ramp no issues. Wilson combat Trigger is nice. It's a longer trigger than the factory one.

CG I have heard nothing but good about the Ruger and the Sig 1911. Can't wait to break in my new Springfield trophy match.

Haven't had a chance to do much shooting this summer, so not much to contribute on the gun-forum front, but I still lurk about.

I seem to remember a ton of contributions but not too many actually involving guns... um, nail guns excluded, lol. Anyway, glad you're still around and hope things are well with you and the family.

I'm curious as to how much $ you have into it now with those upgrades ?

I have the R1 carry and a spent a slight bit over a G out the door.
