  • Shot some .380 out of my 9mm today.

    Soooo;
Took my S&W 9 to the range today it has been several mo. since I fired either the 9 or .380.
Had an open "jar" of the tula gold stuff, noticed a few different colored heads, looked at them and saw they were Rem. , put them to the side.
Ran 4or 5 mags of the Tula with no problems, decided to run the Rem off.
    Fits in the mags nicely.
5 in each mag, first rd. does not cycle; same for the second fires but will not eject.
At this point I'm thinking this crap Rem ammo, ..lol. I did have a cycle problem with this gun when it was new , but after polishing the ramp it has eaten everything for 15 yrs. Perhaps that is the issue coming back I think.
Run the rest of the mag practicing clearing and getting target again.
Ditto on the second mag..clear / fire, clear/ fire etc.
Go back to the Tula run 2 more mags with no issues, so I'm thinking that Rem is a bad batch of ammo...lol.

Look on the floor to clean up the brass and notice a bulged case... wth is that ? I look a bit closer and thats when it hits me..last time I had a few rds. left of a box of .380 I threw them in the "can" thinking I would remember. I did not.

Lesson learned; do not ever mix .380 and 9mm in the same container....dumbass.
I'm thinking the pistol should be alright since the projectiles are the same dia. , but I havn't taken her down yet to inspect the chamber etc..

    My story for the day.
If anyone wants to see the brass I saved it. Not overly bulged, but you can see it easily.

Same thing as shooting a .38 special through a .357 mag. chamber wouldn't you think?

Probably going to get my a$$ handed to me for lack of knowledge but I wouldn't think so. Believe a 38 and 357 essentially chamber the same way (dimension of case, etc). Not sure about 380 and 9mm or there wouldn't have been deformed cases I don't think its ever a good idea to chamber a round not intended for the gun. My 2 cents.

.38/.357 headspace off the rim, .380/9mm headspace off the case mouth.....

                Nothing like that.

Assuming the extractor is still hanging on to the 380, it will be headspaced too far out of the chamber, causing a potential rupture.

If the extractor didn't grab on, the 380 will be loose in the chamber, and if it managed to fire, will fly backwards into the extractor and the bolt face, possibly damaging both.
