What got you into handguns? 2nd Amendment? Or just liked to shoot?

Me, I got into handguns because I liked shoot, and got into handguns before long guns. I bought my 1st gun back in the mid 1990s, but did not get real serious about "personal defense/protection" until around 10am September 11th, 2001.

I would like to think I've come a long way since then, and recognize there is much more ahead for me to learn than has already been known.

Shot BB guns growing up, also shot .22 and 20 gauge shotgun in boy scouts. Starting shooting Pistol while in the Marines along with obviously more rifles, and shotgun.

I enjoy shooting everything. One of the cooler firearms I have shot was the MP-5 while I was in. A M-249 with night vision scope was pretty awesome too.

I'm just about on the same track as you LH, began as fun for shooting and protection, not a hunter or a political person. My Carry Permit applyied for in 1996 and CT just weeks after my NY so I can go to the newly opened Foxwoods in CT and not worry about being jumped in the parking lot, being that I used to go every weekend or so when I was rolling in dough at 21 years old. I bought a shotgun around the same time due to marriage and beginings of a family and the fear of now being the one who will protect my new family life alone, deep in the lonely lands of the Catskill's, and a Henry Lever Repeater for pesky groundhogs ruining my land. Many handguns purchased over the years but long guns and ranges didn't begin for me til 2013 (i always had plenty of my property to shoot). Now the number of longs jumped to the count of 5 plus the Shottie.

Never had access to guns growing up. Sandy Hook made me buy my first gun....I was afraid that if I didn't get one soon the gubment was going to make gun ownership very difficult. I bought a 930 SPX 12 gauge and that's all it took to get addicted. Next came a 22 so my daughter could join me in the fun and then a Mosin to scratch the large bore centerfire itch (which led to the C&R and a pile of collectable rifles). Handguns were simply an obvious progression from there......

Dad bought me my first BB gun back in 1968 when I was 9. It was the Marksman BB/pellet/dart pistol. I was effectively hooked that day. At 13 I got my first BB rifle, a Daisy cowboy lever action. At 18 I added a 10/22. First handgun was back in 1987, a Ruger Security Six. That was the year my wife and I had our first child. That 'protection responsibility' kicked in and I never looked back.

I started with BB and pellet guns, shot 22 in the boy scouts and then on the rifle team in High School. I shot rifles at the range and always hunted. After I shot my first handgun while camping I was hooked!

I went and bought my first 22 pistol,and filed for my Permit, I've been shooting ever since. I even prefer to hunt with my handguns and have taken quite a few deer with them.

My Dad who is legally blind could not shoot any longer and had a like new PPK/s and said do you want it? Of course, so I got my CCW permit now I am addicted with 4 handguns, 2 22s and my grandfathers old side by side shotgun. My 15 year old also loves to shoot, I have only been shooting a little over 2 years now.

I am not a lawyer. It is my general impression that pistol carry licenses do not allow for carry at casinos in CT or NY. Since you were speaking hypothetically - no harm no foul.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Is he alive? I'd take my then blind step dad out to Orchard Beach in the spring and summer time so he could smell the salt air. He LOVED to fish, and especially on the seas. He was a smart fellow though, realized I was making sure we both got our 20min dosage of vitamin D. Sometimes on the way out I'd stop and get some roasted pork or steam grilled fish from one of the African/Cuban/Caribbean places. We'd sit there and eat. I'd describe in great detail to him what little the girls were wearing, and I'd always allow him to discreetly sip his "medication" while we basked in the sun.

Good times, good times. I buried him about a year ago, he died at home peacefully in his sleep like my dad did a couple of decades or so ago.

I've been select fire certified before as an "operator". If I have the coin I will get LE select fire instructor my next time on the recert merry go round. The only issue is finding 1-2k rounds of anything.

Ah, Sandy Hook. We were THAT CLOSE to completely destabilizing. In two weeks I had more folks who wanted to come stay with us or seek me out for advise than in a year. I told one guy in particular who knew better that if the sheets ever hit the fan and he came to my bunker he was going to be shot on sight. He didn't think it was funny, until he realized I wasn't joking.
