PIstol Group Sizes?

I have always wondered if there was some conventional wisdom on what group size one should strive for at the range? To be more specific what groups should one get at 7 yards and 25 yards to be considered "ok", or "good", or "great" or "Awesome".... you get the idea.

Also what is your typical group size at those distances if you don't mind sharing? I know it is pistol dependent as well so feel free to share those details as well.

I don't know if it would be considered good or not, but I've always shot for about a fist sized group at "normal" defensive ranges- about 10 yards or less. For me, this would be somewhat controlled and aimed fire, more so than point shooting, but less than bullseye. I've seen a few people make one ragged hole at 10 yards, but I can't do that. I've also seen people that can't get on paper at 10 yards.
So, yeah, one hole is obviously awesome, and no holes is clearly not awesome, and I suppose good is somewhere in between.

I should first stick a disclaimer in here that I am a NRA Instructor, NRA Instructor Trainer (Training Counselor), Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor (small arms only!) with (current) certifications from SIG, Glock and the NRA.

Does any of the above mean I can shoot? No, and yes. You don't get to pass current NRA LE Instructor school with not being able to shoot, or teach.


Due to misadventures in my youth I have a bunch of messed up body parts that are not conducive to shooting long guns. I can shoot em well, but anything more than 5lbs in my hands wears me out quickly. It is a weird coincidence that a six pack of beer is just under 5 lbs. . .



Under normal conditions with a two handed grip I can consistently hit a 3" x 3" post it note at 15 yards, and make 8/10 hits on that same post it note at 25 yards.

Conditions:
1. With your handgun that I have never shot before. All I ask is that I get to shoot 3 rounds prior to check where the gun is hitting.

2. Left handed (I am right handed).

3. Gun must be reliable and mechanically accurate.



The better thing is, I haven't met anyone who was shooting "horribly", who I wasn't able to make a better shot within an hour.

I punch 2" groups with my X6 or G34 at 25 yards on occasion, when my old injuries do not flare up on me.

I think I am adequate in defensive range, not good and definitely not great by any means and I am still working to improve. I just changed my stance and changed my sight in process. I think the main thing in Handgun is being able to hit center mass. I usually shoot and work more on getting better and more comfortable with the weapon than group sizes. I usually shoot at defensive distances of between 7-12 yards.

I am happy with this for the first time shooting a new to me gun, I feel its adequate to stop someone if needed. I hope to greatly improve with it. 7-12 yard shooting. If you notice I needed to adjust my rear sight to the right to dial it in.

Depends a lot on the firearm and style of shooting. If we are shooting for defense I try to keep them less than 4-5 inches group at any appropriate range. If I am shooting for "quick" defense at short range I am going for a paper plate. If I am doing slow fire with my full sized handgun or revolver then I am going for a sticky note or less.

I'm pretty happy if I keep them in the black at 25 YDs. Of course if a deer walks out onto the range I can get distracted!
