30-06 - Quick Change Barrel for the Remington 700

Any enthusiasts of the 30-06 out there?

I have three brand new barrels in 30-06 for the Remington 700 and I was thinking to sell a couple of them but then it occurred to me what a PITA for
any buyers if they have to fit the assembly to achieve perfect headspace and torque.

So then I thought about making a quick change system for the remington 700 pretty much like we do with the savage but easier and instead of using the savage
nut that has different threads and needs the tool I was thiking on using a 12 point nut machined for the barrel in question so it can be torqued down with a
popular 30mm 12 point wrench like this one....






This will make swapping barrels between seasons very simple so one remington action could serve many purposes and one could do this at home with
just a vise and a few tools.This not only gives more control but also can make the rifle more accurate because headspace can be set to perfection before
final torque down.

I am going to try with a 223 remington that I also have unfired and test it. If this works well then I will do the others.

It is not unique but the current barrel options for the 700 require special tools, jigs and a vise. I am thinking on making an 2 part block that one could even bolt to a 4x4 to
secure the action and just torqueing with a popular nut that doesn't require any other expenses. The key is once you have the headspace you inmobilize the action and barrel and simply torque down with a popular inexpensive tool many might already have.
Another step that one needs to do only one time deal is to put a tiny pin on the recoil lug and the corresponding witness hole in the bottom of the receiver so the
lug will always be centered in position. Very simple too.
This makes the 700 a lot more versatile and attractive IMO.

I am done with barrel and the nut system. Now I am working on the jig to hold action and barrel in place when swapping barrels.

One of the reasons I liked building my Savage, just thread the barrel into the action against the GO-gage and tighten the lock nut, check it with the NOGO and done.

Yes! the system is so simple yet effective that everyone is going that way now.

What I have done with one of the barrels is a step forward. I fabricated one that has a step so the shank is larger on the front (large shank) and small shank in the threads. This gives more meat around the chamber area like a factory rem 700 but it also works with the small shanks, including rebarreling the remington 700 just like a savage.
the only thing is that in both cases one needs to use a large shank recoil lug but those are dirt cheap.

While this is not needed by small cartriges it is not a bad idea once you get into 30-06 and larger. Or simply the 308 to give it more section and a barrel that doesn't heat up so fast. It also has the potential to help with accuracy by design.

Keep talking very interested. My go-to big game rifle is my Rem 700 BDL in .270. Converted it years ago to use magazine since I hated the trap door load.
I would love to interchange to a .308.

That is the whole idea. There are barrels already to do this but you can also retrofit the old one using a large shank thread. In this case the same recoil lug will work because the shank already
has the cut for the factory recoil lug. So the only thing is to shave a few thousands from the remaining and thread the step for a large shank nut. Then the current 270 barrel can be saved.

Occasionally. I am also a wildcatter so I also make my own cartridges for specialty purposes.

Here is one that was born on this forum to create a heavy hammer for hunting yet decent ballistics for the AR15. All barrels, dies and round all made from scratch.

The nice thing about having a long action like the 30-06 is that it will take any other off spring from the old or new service round.
I have the 35 whelen and also a 358 federal + 308 winchester that I can use in either the long or short actions. Same shank, same everything.
IMO there is a huge need for everything modular specially for those who change calibers between seasons or simply want to remain leaner
and spend less.

I finally got to this and I fabricated an adaptor for a stubbed action....

This will make swapping calibers a joy and will also make the sport less complex and expensive vs. owning more and more actions.

This is Version 1.0 of the quick swap caliber wiht universal threads so I can use the same barrels in the R700, Savage10 and others...

No I have not tried it yet but why it should be less accurate? I have used other actions with similar threads that show no ill effect in terms of accuracy potential. The inside threads and tenon is wider and stronger than the one in the AR15. Is AR15 something you consdier accurate enough? Also consider it is a bolt action. I guess we will find out.

Who knows why since it hasn't been done before no way to know. One thing that it could effect is harmonics right?
