I've always used Hoppe's and most of the year I sit at the picnic table on the back patio after a range visit. Nice to be outside and the fumes never an issue. Now that it's as cold as a mother-in-law's heart outside Hoppe's can be overpowering in the house. Would like to try something else that still works well but won't be so offensive. What do you folks use?

Ballistol for everything. I don't have any trouble with the fumes, but my shop is in the basement too. It has an almost flowery scent, and is used as both a cleaner and lubricant. And it's not expensive. This 3 pack goes a very long way.,

If Hoppes is a "10" on the fumes scale, Ballistol is maybe a "2". It's a much more pleasant scent than Hoppes and also cleans/conditions wood, leather, etc. so you don't have to worry about it ruining the finish on a wood gun (or the grips on your 1911). The only warning I've ever heard is to not use it on nickle-plated finishes as it will cause the plating to separate from the base metal if it finds its way into a crack or seam.Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

Hoppes works great on the bore specially left wet for a while it takes copper and lead off wo using the wire brush or other more aggresive methods. It also makes a nice aroma for the clothes, car an as deodorant when going on a hot date. Country chicks love guys smelling of hoppes, i think it is an aphrodisiac. I even put a couple of drops down under.
The other great product is ballistol. You can clean anything. pistols and rifles will be protected and shine, and in the medical field even treat wounds.
The other thing i love is honda motorcycle wax spray. It restores parts to its original shine, and protects against moisture.i even use it in the bore after i clean it dry.
This thing works on everything bikes, cars, helmets and amazing on firearms.
Clean but do not overclean as one can also make more damage from overcleaning.Last edited by Meketrefe; 01-06-2016, 02:47 PM.It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

Butch's Bore Shine for the barrel, and Hoppe's for all the parts. The smell doesn't get too bad as long as I bag up all my patches and Q-tips and take them out to the trash in the garage after I'm done.NRA Life Member
