Is this topic worth it's own thread? The used pistol I just bought has a bit of corrosion on the left side of the slide. That got me thinking about looking into cerakoting it some time in the future. I hear Gunsick has some experience and would love to learn more about it. How much would it cost to have someone else create a slide? How much would it cost to do it myself? Is bead blasting necessary?

You must bead blast, can't be skipped. If you have an air brush set up or a HVLP spray gun all you need is the Cerakote and a oven. Doing one slide yourself is not really cost effective because of the shipping hazmat fee on a small amount of Cerakote. If I did your slide I would charge you $25 if you removed the sights. I have been so busy with work and kids that I haven't done any in a few months compared to once a week over the summer. It's the best gun coating I have used.
I bought my sons out of state.

Have you ever done more than just a solid color coat? I've seen some interesting pictures of Cerakoted firearms that appear to involve multiple colors. Not sure how it's done or how hard it is to do. Have you ever Cerakoted polymer pistol frames?

I have done polymer stocks before so a frame should be no issue. You just have to keep it in the oven longer at a lower temp. I have done patterns for myself but am always scared to do it for others. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what not. To do patterns and multiple colors you half cure the finish between coats.

50$ for mixed colors though (I'm GS's cerakote sales adviser)

What about the gunkote and also those air cured?
There is also one spray that comes with an air bottle cal preval.
I bet nothing beats cerakote with very good preparation right? Also is there is a X rate cerakote that is harder cerakote or something?

Duracoat is what comes in the prevail sprayer. Used it all the time before Cerakote came out. It's a good finish but takes forever to cure and goes on too thick for things like slides and anything tight fitting. I would even use a bunch of reducer and still too thick. Looks like a paint. Cerakote goes on supper thin and looks like part of the metal when it's done. Cerakote makes one for high heat also for parts that get blazing hot. I've had barrels smoking with Cerakote and never effected it, maybe lighter colors yellow or something. They also have air dry clear coats to protect hydro dipping and custom camo jobs.

Actually saw one that they say it was ceramic where you have to press a plastic thing at the bottom and that mixes the media. They say you have to plan because will only last 24 hrs.
and then all content is lost so I guess is not for small jobs.

So I've been looking at the colors on the Cerakote website and at all kinds of pictures of Cerakoted firearms. There are almost too many different options to consider. Just when I was feeling overwhelmed by the possibilities, it occurred to me that I live in New Yorkistan.

Is it a bad idea to get anything other than a plain subdued color on a carry or home defense pistol while living in this messed up state? I'm imagining a lawyer holding up a uniquely colored pistol at a trial for a self defense shooting.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury. I present to you the pistol used by this gun owner to shoot my repeat criminal offender client. Notice the flashy custom coloring on the slide. Does this look like the gun of a person who is mainly concerned with defending themselves? Or does this look like the gun of a firearm fanatic who is just looking for an excuse to show off his pimped out pistol by shooting my client?"

They could say the same about a flashy stainless or nickle plated firearm. Don't forget about the extended mag release and slide release you added that help you kill more people faster.

You're right. I'm not sure what I wast thinking. Just the fact that it's a gun is enough to get you in trouble in New Yorkistan.

You worry too much. Make it a black coyote job.
Otherwise the hello kitty is another popular one.
