Can I use wax to cast a chamber? I have a Remington 700 barrel and I don't remember the caliber it's chambered in. I think it's .300 win mag but not sure, I remember it's 300 something lol. It was from a guy that wanted to get a muzzle break made for it. What he wanted was impossible to do without the receiver. After calls and calls that were never returned this has been floating around for 3 years. I'm looking to either use it or sell it for something else for a build my friend wants to do. It has no markings of any kind on it and looks new to me. It's also huge maybe a varmint bull profile.

Hard to tell but in one picture looks like a magnum. If the bore is 308 (easy to say with the calipers) chances are this might be a winmag.
So easy to do, take a winmag case, and drop it in the chamber. the case should headspace on the rim and only protrude .135 or so that is
the recess int he remington tenon. In other words flush with the end of the tenon with a few toushands give and take that you adjust when
building. If it looks like a good fit then take the case out and mark it with blue marker. Then drop it again and turn it around in the chamber.
you should see the contact points in the neck, shoulder and taper of the case. This iwll tell you is a fit.
If it is not a winmag measure with calipers from the case neck to the end of the tenon. Also measure from the shoulder to the tenon this
might not be precise but will give me an idea. Also the base before the rim (std. magnums are .511). Give me the measures and I will tell you if it matches any known chambers. I have many of them and others I have a huge database and books with all of them so I can search.
I hope this helps.Last edited by Meketrefe; 11-14-2014, 07:02 PM.It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

Too expensive for this redneck gunsmith! I was thinking paraffin wax as it won't shrink. I would do it with a casing but it one if the only calibers I don't have a round for.I bought my sons out of state.

The wax shouldn't be an issue, might be a pain to get it out but might not. I am sure you know someone with that caliber you can toss in it to see.www.AvidArms.com I'm STIHL out of conditioner!!
