  • Handguards and NY unSAFE Act.

Is there anything in the UNSAFE act that limits the size of a handguard.

If a handguard was so long that it would completely cover the barrel is there anything regarding compliance? I don't think so but just to see what you guys and gals think.
Lets say the barrel has the proper lenght of 16" or longer and it has a target crown just to make sure all that is not open for arbitrary interpretation.

So like in this upper, lets say the supressor is not a supressor and simply an extension of the hand guard with vents (shrouded).
And under all this is just a simple 16" barrel with target crown.

So here is a draft of the proposed extension....

So here is how this could look...

Cosmetically it will be hard to say the difference between an extension and a supressor (aside from the noice of course) but safe
act is only about cosmetic nonsense anyway.

Don't see an issue until some lib calls it a barrel shroud.

Hmmm. It has a scary look to it. Probably illegal for sure.

Well they can call it anything they want. That is their specialty, inventing names for firearms and parts.

In any case no shroud mention under the rifle section of the law...

Would the handguard hold up to the forward force of the gases? I know you said it would be vented, but how strong is a handguard to begin with? I'm only asking because ... my right to own a gun I had on order was taken from me in 2013 and I don't have enough knowledge of them to give this a yes or no answer. I can say without a doubt that there is nothing I can find in the BS UNSAFE Act that this would be considered a feature.

It's simply a "crown protector". Libs aren't the only ones that can use creative language. Also, I suggest painting a smiley face on the end to totally eliminate the scary factor.

Done. Even Skretny would't be able to call it a scary rifle now.

Won't your fingers get blasted with some of the gas getting redirected back into the handguard?

in the rochester specific code there is this provision that could render this application an "assault weapon" (S47-5):
A barrel jacket surrounding all or a portion of the barrel to dissipate heat therefrom

I haven't read all the fine print, but I can see how a design that includes some o-rings could seal things up nicely.

The goal is to avoid threads on the barrel right? I'm thinking an attachment that is fixed to the hand guard but goes over the end of the barrel for alignment purposes. Some o-rings could be included in the section that goes over the end of the barrel.
