  • Universal Sight Tool (The metal machinist thread).

I started the machinist thread with the hope people invest with ideas, opinions and suggestions.
I thought this would be a cool simple project to boot up and something very useful for any firearms enthusiast.

This is the original thread we have to boot this type of projects...
    http://www.nyshenaniguns.com/forum/g...chinist-thread

I started simple with a decent clamp, not brutally expensive but also not a cheap one. I wanted a quality U clamp.

I drilled and tapped for a M4-.7 bolt.

It works fine in the shield.

Originally I drilled the tip to insert a brass tip but I realized the bolt was perfect for
a small primer cup so I used that instead. Since they are soft metal they are great
protection to avoid scuffing the sights.

they also work great in the front.

Now is the turn for the glock.

Pardon my ignorance... is this something I could use on a rifle?
        Athiest. Because... science

Some rifles with dove tail, yes. But it really depends. One could add a square bushing to wrap the barrel for the front sight so it doesn't rotate/move.
for the back sites some you might be ok but one might need a larger clamp in case one needs to wrap around the handguard. Then one could shim it with some
material like wood or nylon also to prevent any scuffing. Whatever it is the concept is the same. Get the u clamp tight and stead and then the pusher bolt
will do the rest of the work. As you can see it doesn't have to be too sophisticated and a bit of masking tape takes care of the protection to avoid any marks.

You may want to think about how to add different heights for the pusher screw, unless you have found that isn't necessary at this point. Also, what is the material on the tip of the clamping screw? You can buy nylon or delrin caps (or machine one) so that you don't have to worry about scratching and taping.

I know, I could do a lot of things but this works and should be easy for most folks. in the tip I used a spent primer that is very soft brass. It works.
If I do another version I would do a threaded through piece and long bolt so one could change the pieces with different shapes and even slant cut for some.
This tip doesn't leave any marks. But maybe we should make a V.2 with your suggestions. It takes 30 minutes to fabricate one.

I was actually asking what material the "big end" screw was made out of. The primer cup was a great idea.

Oh I see. It is steel. I guess one could put a nylon cup on top. this way no need for the masking tape.
So yeah. I will follow your advice and make another one with a nylon cup over. I can machine one to fit. That should take minutes.

If you have a picture of the rifle you have in mind we can take a look and see how this could be adapted. the more universal, the better IMO.
I think the expensive sight tools that both push and pull they are useless because after all after a small adjustment at the bench you want something
that you can quickly remove and test a few shots and then adjust again if still needed. Another idea I thought about was to make a large square clamp
and incorporate a small rail for a micro dot sight. This will allow for a one shot zero with any sights.

But in reality I can do a one shot close to zero with most rifles and then just fine tune. Nobody should need more than two or three shots to get to zero.

Thanks. I order a couple but then I realized I had this very nice clamp for the photo studio I never used. So I am giving the new life.
I will keep bringing more subjects but we also need more folks to participate. We need to recruit more people who want to do projects.
Projects are fun and they are time well spent IMO.

Where is everyone today? ..it must be the "San Valentino" keeping everyone busy.....
