  • What would you do?

I have just converted my 38 super double stacked 1911 to 45 ACP which leaves me with a colt series 80 slide, a Barsto ramped Barrel, Briley bushing, a the stock colt barrel and bushing, and a couple of extended ejectors.

I am contemplating a few courses of action.
Buy a caspian single stack race ready frame and build another 38 Super
Sell all the 38 super parts
Trade the 38 super parts for AR parts

i still have a couple of EAA witnesses in 38 super. I could convert those to 45 ACP and then get rid of the 38 super all together. I have thousands of pieces of brass dies and of course all the parts. If I could get the going gun broker rate for all of it I could buy another Rem 700 in 308, lol. Oh the problems I have.....

I suppose you are right USMC, the only reason I was contemplating getting a new frame is to continue my kids gunsmithing education. I have been teaching him to build guns.

My vote is you teach him to build an AR.

I don't have a clue about the pistol stuff, but I'm wi th Gunsick. America needs more of America's rifle.

Already done that a couple of times. The 1911 requires a lot more thinking and patience

convert the 38 super to the 9x25 dillon and then learn how to deal with a new level of brutality from an autloading pistol.

Not really interested in the 9x25, while shooting IPSC In 94 I was standing behind Robbie Latham as he was shooting the stage with his 9x25 and while it was impressive to watch him shoot it, I had no desire to go that route.

Are you looking for a power factor or simply something fun and accurate to shoot?

Neither really, just something to do. I converted the double stack 1911 to a 45 because getting 10 rounders for the 38 super was almost down right impossible. So if I am limited on capacity it may as well be a 45. I do have a double stack 1911 in 40 so my 38 super limited capacity mags will work in that gun as well. So I really didn't lose anything.

Now I just have an extra slide, couple of barrels and slide stop. I was actually thinking about building a single stack 38 super, just to teach the kid how to do it. I can sell the parts and use the money to build another rifle.

What about the 9x23 Winchester? It resolves some of the shortcomings of the 38 super.
Also there is a version of the tokarev in .308 diameter bore vs. .310. This is an amazing flat shooting round. 1800fps.
Both can use same bolt face, extractor ejector as the luger / 38 super.

It doesn't resolve the most important shortcoming of 38 super, price and availability of brass

I have about 10,000 pieces of brass for the super so brass is not an issue. I haven't shot competition in over a decade. I am not really interested gathering all the stuff for a new caliber. If I was to change calibers it would be to a TS&W 356 or a 9mm Luger.

Brass is endless because it can be easily cut and made from 223R for all these calibers.
Super, 9x21, 9x23, 9x25 mauser / largo, Tokarev, Tokarev wildcalt in 308, etc...
One will have to adjust the loads for the extra web but these cases will last for ever specially
                              the lake city and similar.
