What I take away from this is if you have a population that has grown up with and respects firearms then you have LESS gun accidents.

It was somewhat like that here in the US not too many decades ago. Recently watched an old Bonanza re-run and there were 2 young kids 8-10 or so in town and the younger one had and old lever action and no adult supervision in sight. Looked like a Stevens " Favorite". This country's familiarity with firearms helped out very much in our past conflicts where our rifleman excelled. Isn't it something how a few liberals can screw most everything up???Comment

Gasp! The horror! How can that be?Perhaps the most noticeable difference between Swiss and American rifle ranges is the presence of alcohol. Beer and Wine are readily available at Swiss Ranges. I'm surprised to read that they don't use slings much. I figured with their military marksmanship history and the common use of coats, gloves, and target sights, slings would be more the rule than the exception.
Not completely "the way it should be".Sadly, shooting is very limited in Switzerland these days. As I mentioned above, your are strictly limited in the choice of rifles you can fire on public ranges. In addition, new noise ordinances limited the amount of time you can fire. At Bursins, shooting is only allowed on Wednesday evenings, and in Basel, shooting is done on Thursday evening. Further, the various protection devices that are now being required, be they bullet walls or sound tunnels, are very expensive, and a number of ranges have been forced to shut down, as they couldn't afford the "upgrades". I have to work on the Swiss tactical stand that requires and strict regimen of 7 gallons of beer/week + keep hands in your pockets....
Hämmerli pistols, especially 280s and SP 20s, were the smallbore pistols of choice. SIG 210s were the predominant large caliber pistol. At least one Model 06/29 Luger was present, but wasn't used. Shooting is typically done one-handed, although two-handed shooting is allowed
