  • NYS Red Flag Gofundme

Anyone hear about this case? I haven't heard any specifics of any Red Flag confiscations yet, so I was surprised to see a tweet from Maj Toure about this GoFundMe.

Apparently this is blowing up on Twitter. Sounds like all of this is over a 30 round magazine someone told the police he had?

Sounds like a crazy situation that was going on in Mahopac. An abriged version of the Bundy ranch standoff in 2014. I hope that Alex gets the help he needs and is not railroaded from here on out, but living in NY it sounds like he's going to have a rough road ahead.

He now has 135,000 followers on Instagram. No idea how many he had before this incident.

Sounds like this wasn't the Mendon case.

Trying to figure out what's real and what's disinformation at this point is a joke. Media reports are totally inconsistent and I'm not sure if that's just typical media incompetence or sign they aren't getting a straight story from the authorities. Hanlon's Razor?

If the attached tweet is legit, it's an educational experience. My wife's company sells RF shielding pouches that I keep thinking I should buy.

Update on the Putnam County situation from last eve.

From PCFOA (Putnam County Firearms Owners Association)

"We just got the following information about last night's standoff (11/23/19) in Mahopac from a reputable Police source. It is our understanding that this is what occurred:
Alexander Booth is reported to be a mentally disturbed man. His WIFE and daughter had an ORDER OF PROTECTION against him because they feared for their safety. His wife and daughter were living at a different location, NOT in his house. Somehow Mr Booth found out where they were staying, and reportedly while intoxicated, forcibly broke into the safe house. (It was NOT Booth's House) That's apparently why Mr Booth was charged with burglary. Mr Booth reportedly VIOLATED the order of protection that his wife and daughter had against him.
This was NOT a 2A issue.
Some people, probably anti-2A provocateurs, or possibly even some well meaning fools were inciting our people to take action that would damage the credibility of our organization.
So many people from around the country were calling that they seriously disrupted the 911 EMERGENCY SYSTEM. If someone was having a medical emergency such as a heart attack or your house was on fire or a criminal was invading a citizens home, people could NOT contact emergency services for life saving help.
Those that were involved in spreading this dangerous MISINFORMATION should be ashamed of themselves and must be more careful in the future. If you believe someone's 2A rights are being violated in Putnam County, please message us BEFORE posting on our page or in our group so we may fact check it first! Any questionable posts will be removed immediately until we ascertain the facts."

                        https://2acops.com/2019/11/24/whiske...-2a-community/

Absolutely none of this was helped by the horrible way the social media aspect was handled by the local agencies involved. They would post something, then delete it, and replace it with something else. Finally, a post describing the incident was posted, but later, it too was inexplicably deleted. The law enforcement social media message was incoherent at best.
Law enforcement agencies need to learn how to deal with things on social media. And I mean absolutely MUST get better about how they deal with things on social media. It is no longer an option. Social media drives so many things today that it is dangerous for everyone to not know how to properly communicate the right message.
So what's the real story, and does it even matter at this point? It might not matter much because of how much this thing blew up online, aided at least in part by the police offering weird and changing stories. The fact that the police bungled the PR aspect (which they likely weren't expecting and probably don't have the resources to handle even if they were expecting it) will leave people forever suspicious of their explanation. The fact that American Thinker published an article about it and a guy I know in California knew about it before I even mentioned it to him means certain people will believe it forever and it will further erode the relationship between police and gun owners.

But let's just accept the police story is 100% true and this guy needed to be arrested. That means if the dolts in Albany stopped passing idiotic laws like the "red flag" nonsense, this guy wouldn't have had a hot button angle to play over social media to get people mad at the police. The police are the ones who these stupid laws will endanger most, so they really aught to get more serious about taking a political stand against laws that criminalize the law abiding.

I'm happy to see the LEOs being fairly vocal about opposing the new criminal justice reform, but perhaps if they'd started speaking up earlier the politicians wouldn't think they were pushovers on this latest insanity.

There's a big thread over on the other NY gun forum talking about this. There's something like 3 different stories about what happened and why. It's a giany mess.
