Random thought here, I was just wondering if it was legal to build/own/fire a cannon in nys. Hard to find an answer on this one. I'm not talking anything that takes a cartridge but maybe a mini cannon with black powder. Maybe somebody here already wondered and did the work combing through new York laws lol gotta admit it would be fun to have a cannon!

Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own
I have to bend over too far
I get a boner.
bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!
I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

Blackpowdershooter has built a homemade cannon and fires it at appropriate events here in WNY.
Our own BPS on the far right with his cannon at the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" event at Ontario Rod and Gun Club, April 19, 2014:

I figured it would be in some sort of grey area around "antique or primitive" firearm. Doubt ill ever do I but it sounds like a fun project anyway. I said mini cannon but a full size cannon would be amazing haha I'm sure the noise would draw a wee bit of attention. Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?

Not to hijack the thread, but I have an Uncle that's a machinist who made his own cannon years ago, and the bore was machined to fire golf balls. We were setting it off in his backyard on the 4th, and it was nothing but wilderness behind their house. A neighbor complained about the noise in the middle of the afternoon, and sure enough a couple of County Sheriffs dropped by to check things out. They asked my uncle what all the noise was, and his reply was "Here, I'll show you...." He loaded up and fired off a round. BOOOOOOOMMM!!! Golf ball disappeared faster than 3 lines of Coke in front of Charlie Sheen. The cops looked at Uncle Steve, looked at the cannon, looked back at Uncle Steve.. and were like.... "DO THAT AGAIN..." Haha. He loaded up another round and fired it off, they laughed their asses off and shook his hand, went next door and told the neighbor to piss up a rope, and took off.Originally posted by FinalWinchester View PostI figured it would be in some sort of grey area around "antique or primitive" firearm. I was thinking something small like the golf ball cannon mentioned above would just be fun. Curiosity made me post about the legality to see if you could do anything of the sort in new York. By the looks of the picture you have a fair bit of experience with some artillery huh?Originally posted by blackpowdershooter30 View PostFinalWinchester You rang?! So you wanna be a cannoneer huh?Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?

Front stuffers meaning anything that is muzzle loading is good to go. It’s good with the state the atf and who ever else would go to look at it. Breech loafers on the other hand are a different story lol. Due to the NFA it’s illegal to have a unregistered destructive device. What make a artillery piece a destructive device you ask? Well it is anything that is breech loading that accepts a fixed ammunition. Believe it or not the 16 inch gun on the uss Missouri is not considered a destructive device because the 2000 pound projectile is loaded separately from the 250 pounds of powder it takes to throw it miles in one direction. Or at least in the legal definition of the law it is. So any breech loader that either has a projectile that is divorced from the cartridge or has a separated ignition source is good to go under the NFA and requires no paperwork what so ever.

I'm thinking just something small like a golf ball sized muzzle loading cannon to try out, what i'm wondering is what would be strong enough to withstand the pressure of the black powder load that would be fired in it. Not sure if i have the expertise or ability to build it, but i would sure as hell like to try as long as it is safe. Strong emphasis on safety, don't want to blow anything up lolAre you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?
