Like others have said 10/22 is a solid choice but you have a lot of options with a 22 LR. 10/22 is a semi automatic with lots of options and aftermarket parts if you want to customize it down the road. I don't own a Takedown, but you might want to consider that version for backpacking/camping or SHTF gun. There are other options though. 10/22 uses a removable mag, so you are limited to 10 rounds in NYS (Note I believe 7 rounds loaded in magazine is technically still on the books in NYS but it has since been deemed unconstitutional by at least two courts; I'm not aware if legislature has conformed law to court decisions). You could always go with a tube fed 22LR and have the benefit of higher magazine capacity. I have a Remington 527 (I think) Speedmaster that is fun to shoot. You could also go with a pump action such as a Remington 572. Or you might fancy a lever gun such as a Marlin 39A calling from Texas and all Of course, if you want the best accuracy, there's no substitute for a bolt action such as a Ruger 77/22. These are just some choices, but the point being figure out what you want out of the gun first and then review brands. My two cents.

Thanks CG and DWA! Yeah, I started looking last night with just a general Google search for .22 rifle and holy crap a lot of hits came up. Mostly places like Gander Mountain or Academy Sports selling tons of models.

I'm basically looking for something that is 1) reliable, 2) easy to shoot and 3) doesn't violate the BS unSAFE Peshitta but still looks good. I'd probably want to stick with semi auto or tube fed. The main reasoning for this gun would be something that my wife could shoot if she wanted and something I could use to introduce people to shooting if the opportunity ever came up (and it just might considering some of the people I work with). In a previous post I mentioned the wife refuses to shoot the Mossy which is understandable since she didn't grow up around guns. I made the mistake of having her shoot my S&W .40 for her first experience with a firearm....bad idea! It scared the crap out of her. However, her uncle gave her a nice Rossi .22 revolver that she absolutely loved both on weight and recoil. I gotta admit I like shooting it too, it's a nice revolver!
I could be wrong...it's happened before and it'll happen again.

        I would recommend mag-fed.

While tube has higher capacity, there are some downsides:
        - shooter typically points muzzle skyward to load (a no-no at a lot of ranges with a blue-sky rule)
        - noobs tend to sweep their own hands when loading tube
        - if you are shooting competition (or something like Appleseed), rapid reloads are problematic

        Just my .02
Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

I have to bend over too far

        I get a boner.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

Thanks Thughes! So, mag fed it is! The fewer potential problems the better!

I trust what you guys say here as far as reliability etc. Otherwise I wouldn't ask A 10/22 it will be! I stumbled across a place that sells some really nice custom stocks for 10/22's and man are they proud of them, lmao!

This won't be happening anytime soon but maybe next month once I have a range to go to (emailing someone about that right now) where I can actually shoot! Oh, and get a longer barrel for the Mossy so I can try my hand at skeep/trap. Haven't done that since I was in Boy Scouts at the National Jamboree in 1993, haha!

Whatever you end up with, if you're not gonna scope it you will definitely want to get some Tech sights for it.

Thanks for reminding me Thughes! I have some optics/sights questions but I'll start a new thread for that.

I have a 10/22 takedown, a Henry 001 Lever action (tube mag) and a Mexsar Mendoza (tube mag - sold by Classic). I had a Marlin 795 (detachable 10 rd mag) but had nothing but issues with it which is odd - they have a good reputation and a loyal following - I must have gotten the exception to the rule. The 10/22 and Mexsar are both semi-auto but the detachable mag 10/22 seems to be easier for newbies to manipulate and keep pointed in a safe direction. As many have said you can't go wrong with the 10/22 especially with the aftermarket parts/upgrades available and 25 rd mags if you move out of this crummy state.
Ok I can go a couple ways

Well Calculon, moving ain't happening anytime soon so I'll have to deal with it. Oh, I'm in contact with that range I was asking you about on the phone a little while back. Supposed to meet up with someone this weekend to check the place out.
