  • NJ Gun Regs

    Is anyone familiar with the laws in NJ? I did a Google search for forums in NJ, but they look retarded. I don't want to be from NJ, but too late now, lol. I suppose I could just find the pertinent info on a state.org website somewhere, but don't really feel like reading through it right now. Just a brief overview would be good.

    Not 100% sure but believe you need to apply for firearms ID card for all guns both pistol and long gun and need Id card to purchase firearms or ammo. Not clear on pistol permit but believe you do not need permit to possess in house or at range but can't carry without permit. You do need the ID card. Check carryusa website for permit info. Believe you will be able to transport between two homes following Federal Law (locked and unloaded).

      "New Jersey calls its permit a "permit to carry a handgun" and is a "may-issue" state for firearm carry, either openly or concealed. Permit applicants must "specify in detail the urgent necessity for self-protection, as evidenced by specific threats or previous attacks which demonstrate a special danger to the applicant's life that cannot be avoided by means other than by issuance of a permit to carry a handgun." As a result of this tough standard, New Jersey is effectively a "no issue" state unless one is a retired law enforcement officer. Armed security officers and armored car drivers typically get restricted permits limited to carry while on duty only. A letter of need from the security company is required."

      At least you can load 15 rounds.

      From the penal code:

      (d) Each application form shall also be accompanied by a written certification of need which shall be under oath and which:
      1. In the case of a private citizen shall specify in detail the urgent necessity for self-protection, as evidenced by specific threats or previous attacks which demonstrate a special danger to the applicant's life that cannot be avoided by means other than by issuance of a permit to carry a handgun. Where possible the applicant shall corroborate the existence of any specific threats or previous attacks by reference to reports of such incidents to the appropriate law enforcement agencies;

      So, it looks like the whole state of NJ is worse than NYC when it comes to your chances for obtaining a handgun permit.

        You also need to apply for and be issued an "identification" card to legally purchase a long gun or any ammunition.

          Thanks, guys. NJ is no worse than NYC when it comes to carry - pretty much the same. There have been stories about people in NYC who've been refused a carry permit despite proof that they had threats against them, and were subsequently killed.

          I'll look further into whether I can just bring one of the handguns from PA without permitting - knowing that I won't be carrying it. Ammo I can get in PA (or online, not to rub it in).

            From the NJSP website:

            "A10: Firearms which have been legally acquired in another state and are legal to possess in New Jersey may be brought to New Jersey by the owner when residency is established. The owner may VOLUNTARILY register the firearm(s) by completing a Voluntary Form of Firearms Registration, however the owner is not obligated to do so."

            Bwahahahahaha! What kind of idiots do that?

                  Guess I should have clarified my comment with, it is illegal to use hollow points in a CCW in the wonderful state of FUNJ.

                      (2) Nothing is sub section f (1) shall be construed to prevent a person from keeping such ammunition at his dwelling, premises or other land owned or possessed by him, or from carrying such ammunition from the place of purchase to said dwelling or land

                      It appears you can "purchase this ammunition and keep it within the confines of his property" but it doesn't specifically address loading and shooting said ammo within the confines of your property. Purposely vague language designed to entrap a law-abiding citizen......as NY's we are very familiar with that playbook.
