  • Rethinking optics on MSR

Recently, a family member bought a primary arms 4x with their ACSS reticle. It's ACOG like in that it includes holdover and lead in the reticle. Burris also has something like this. Both are in the $300 range +/- $50.

As I've started to think about it, considering cost, my aging eyes, and the fact that I'm not a high-speed, low drag operator, this seems like a great option for me over a standard red dot. It seems to bridge the close up/fast acquisition and longer range philosophy of uses.

I currently have a red dot zeroed at 100 yards with a 6x magnifier on it, however any distance shots would still need to include a holdover with the red dot, which I think limits the benefit of the magnification.

All things considered, I'm liking the idea of having that versatility in one scope.

Here's the link to what I'm talking about if you aren't familiar... http://www.primaryarms.com/Primary_A...pe_p/pac4x.htm

Anybody use one of these or have any thoughts about them?

As far as Primary Arms goes I'm pretty content with my PA MicroDot. It hasn't taken any ridiculous hits but has held its zero in the backseat to and from the range. While the PA may attempt to function like an ACOG... Its not one. I had an ACOG in Iraq. Awesome sight. CRAZY durable. But the important part is at the range.

With the red chevron on the ACOG you can use it like a red dot at close range. Meaning for a shot at 50-100 meters you can leave both eyes open and focus on your target like you would do with a red dot. Awesome. Those longer range shots, the 4X really helps with. The way the drop reticle is made helps you judge distance as well, because the width of the line is equal to the width of a mans shoulders at that distance. So if you don't know how far your shooting you just measure up the width to their shoulders, center mass, ping ping. All done.

4X scopes in general make awesome sense to me. Speed up close, and precision at a distance. If your going to be covering the whole slew of ranges... I think it would be pretty hard to beat a 4X unless your talking about reaching out further than 300m at targets smaller than a man. In which case I think other calibers could be better. But I digress. I think PA is a reliable company. I stripped a screw on my microdot mount when I bought it from them and they turned around and sent me another one with a return label for my damaged one. Great people to deal with. Fast and reliable service with affordable decent products.

The only reason I choose a MicroDot over a 4X is that I don't shoot at a very far distance often,

Yeah, I'm only comparing to ACOG as far as the reticle goes, nothing more.

Beyond that, you comments align with my thinking and intent on starting this thread.

All depends on your use. Personally, I would have zero use for that, but thats me, if you like it, go for it.

A decent 2-7 small scope will allow you to shoot from close range with fast acquisition to very far away with the help of a rapid reticle.
Also some decent 1-6 options out there with 4 to 5 eye relief and crisp for this type of use. some come with illumination option build on a proper scope/erector tube.
I have been very happy with Burris, Weaver and Vortex. All with lifetime unconditional warranty should I ever need it.
It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance
