variables.... if i have to clear my home id prefer a handgun for retention, maneuverability, capacity/reloads, single handed operation, etc... if i have myself and my family in a safe room id probably prefer to have a carbine with a standard capacity magazine.... although since we are in NY, i suppose id have to settle for a shotgun with 8 rounds of 00 buck with my handgun as a backup.

Mossberg 500 12 ga with 20" barrel, 7+1, 2 3/4" #00 Buck, and integrated 120 lumen EOTech fore end light (one of the best investments I ever made for an HD gun). That'll be to dig in with the family upstairs until the coast is clear.

I'd move to plan B if I had to actually go downstairs and clear the house or outside for any reason. Plan B is classified.

I should also mention that every gun stashed for defensive use has an extra loaded mag and high lumen tactical light paired with it.
Politicians are like diapers. They both need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

nothing beats the shotgun, point in the general direction of the criminals and kaboom.

but a 9mm with 100 rounds drums would also be hard to beat. LOL

The best home defense firearm it has nothing to do with the firearm and more with the training and conditioning to be super effective
and keep the head cold in those situations too.

I am also thinking since autoloading shotguns with detachable mags are not compliant super light repeater rifle with 10 round magazines like a 308
could be easily rechambered to a custom 458 winchester magnum and then ream every case to reduce the load and to use load 3 or 4 200gr slugs shooting subsonic.
This would be more powerful and devastating than a shotgun and with magazines to spare. A true shredder... just imagine 3-4 shots similar to 45 ACP
with every shot of the rifle.
This would have to be re-barreled obviously and it should be quiet too. It would work great just like the 450 marlin conversions for the AR10.

Flamethrower. No risk of over penetrating, effective at home defense ranges and beyond. Sure to stop the threat.

There is propane to the lawn sprinklers.

I am upgrading to connect it to the TV remote.

The best weapon for home defense is the one you know how to use without thinking about it, and is there when you need it.

I have a Glock 17 on the nightstand. Loaded. Spare mags in pouches, so I can throw them on like a necklace quickly.
A Mossberg835 Ultimag in the gun cabinet at the end of bed. Shells in sling.

                Perfect setup for my home?
I'd like a 45ACP handgun with x300 on the night stand.
A 12guage with weapon light in the cabinet.

I'm pretty satisfied with my setup. I more accustomed to running an AR room clearing, but it doesn't make sense given where I live now. I'm to close to neighbors and major roads to send .223 through a wall. I have 00Buck in the sling of the shot gun, and if the occasion gives me more then a minute I will use the shotgun. If it doesn't the Glock will have to do. I used to load target loads in the shotgun, because I had other apartments in the same house. Since I no longer need to worry about over penetration I have 00Buck in the sling.

No Brian, the question relates to defense of YOUR home, not the one half a mile down the road.

Okay..... well in that case, I reassessed my HD strategy a couple months ago and decided to drop 12g all together and run a glock 30s as my standard HD setup

I have my Mossburg 500 loaded up with Ohlins Military 00 Buckshot and my XDm .45 ready to go. That should be good enough!

The only additional good measures would be a good camera/security system and a well trained dog that has much better senses than a human. Considering how well K9's can hear and smell, not to mention a pair of teeth with a growl to make a bad guy think twice, they would be a good addition to the homestead.

I would have to agree a semi auto shotgun would be the best home defense with a 18 inch barrel,if you do not have a shotgun I would go with a semi auto pistol such as a 45,40 or 9mm as it would be the most easiest to carry and move around plus you can have a couple 10 round magazines to carry around where a shotgun your limited and it is not as easy to reload a shotgun where a pistol you can load a lot faster if need be.

Now if it was legal I think I would own a MP5..
I could probably could get away with a 52 inch shaft but if I could get a 54 inch shaft that would be great as I could always adjust the length of the shaft
