  • What is the ideal home defense weapon ?

Would it be a rifle, shotgun , pistol? What caliber or gauge?

I guess some considerations would be barell length for moving around corners, stopping power, prevention of over penetration, ease of use for most people?

What type of shell or round would you combine with the firearm you choose?

Is this an absolute ideal? Or a "legal in New Yorkistan" ideal?

I'd think "ideal" would be something like a suppressed MP5 with frangible ammunition.

MP5 is kinda heavy especially with dual magazines loaded. Also if were talking select fire its very easy to go from safe too full auto when trying to get to semi. I think the selector is a tad to far away. I actually had temporary nerve damage from using it lol.

I do like idea of suppressor, don't want to damage your hearing or that of burglar because you might get sued lol!

Shotgun, 18" barrel, #4 buckshot for me (neighbor's houses are only a driveway-width away on both sides).

.45 if i have to wander outside to see what all the ruckus is about.....

The one you are willing ready and able to use to defend your life and your family.

My personal choice? A semi auto shotgun. I know what stress and adrenaline does to the body and dont like having to work fine motor skills in that kind of situation. Close quarter room to room, potentially putting rounds through walls or couches? I want lots of room for error in my aim and like the option of 9 pellets vs my .45. Plus, a light source on my shotty is awesome.

18" shottie. #1 buck is what I have. Not sure I would change it if I had a pistol permit.or access to other choices. I'd be interested in a bullpup config, but as a lefty, it looks like the ejection port sends rounds into my face.

I think a bullpup shotgun would be great, if a reliable bullpup existed. You get the versatility of a shotgun in a more compact package, making room navigation easier.

I'd have to go with the 18" shottie. Mines the Benelli M4 with a surefire light. Hard to beat. Mine has 00 in the tube with some slugs on the rail but thinking about using lighter shot.

Pump shotgun starting with 7.5 shot for close quarters. My objective is to drive said perp from the house. 2.75" trap shells are fine. First two rounds down the tube. Follow up shells are 3"; 4 shot 1.5 ounce plus. Choke is IC.

If I'm able to be in my "safe" room, pump shotgun with 00 buck. If I need to move around, one of my 9mm or .40 cal pistols with jhp's (depends on where i happen to be, and whats in reach) I would prefer the shottie, but too many corners for something that large.
In addition, I would like to be able to have a suppressor on said pistols, but this being NY, I guess I'll have to deal with being blind and deaf, but alive.
