He had a porcupine treed outside his door and wanted me to come and shoot it, so his dogs wouldn't get into it. I was actually in Massachusetts and couldn't help him.
I knew he had a gun, so I asked why he didn't do it. He said he was out of ammo. Well, that's not good planning on his part, I told him. lol
Mrs. Pop and I went out to dinner with him and his wife the other night, so afterwards on the way home, I asked about the porcupine, which not surprisingly left on it's own. I asked if he got more ammo for his gun. He said no, he wasn't sure what kind of ammo it took. What caliber is it, I asked. He didn't know. He had thrown out the empty box.
Intrigued, because he obviously didn't know much about guns, and we had picked them up for dinner, I offered to take a look at it for him. He had it out in the detached garage. I should have taken a picture. What a sorry excuse for a gun. It was so rusty, you could hardly read any of the info on the barrel. He had taken some kind of implement to the barrel to remove the rust, and had left scratches in it.
It turns out what he had was a break open, single shot .410 Pardner SB1, manufactured by New England Firearms. What a shame. At least he only plans to shoot bird shot out of it. I should probably offer to clean it for him, before he completely destroys it from neglect.
