LPVO vs. Red Dot

Trying to figure out an optic that will be versatile, but not break the bank. I'm intrigued by the new(ish) low power variable optic scopes. First final plane is especially intriguing, but they're not exactly cheap.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

At this point in the game I'm more concerned about beating Jeff, but @MR52C does seem to be progressing rapidly.
