I don't think Flamethrowers are currently illegal in New Yorkistan. If they are already illegal, then Assembly Bill A2976 seems like it would be a complete waste of time.

A2976 - SUMMARY

Relates to prohibiting the sale, manufacture or possession of flamethrowers; exempts historical flamethrowers, flamethrowers used for agriculture or film and television productions and flamethrowers lawfully acquired before the section takes effect.

A2976 is currently in committee. There's no telling how long it will be before Musk's flamethrower actually starts shipping, and A2976 seems to include a grandfather clause for flamethrowers people already own. If your heart is set on owning a flamethrower, you might want to hurry up and buy one that is currently available before they pass this law.
