I still want a small bucket full of them, just to try. Boiling seems like the easiest way to open them, or maybe use my vise in the basement. Maybe I'll even try my hand at making a black walnut stain. lol

That is a NICE looking bunch of meat!
I can still find a use for my thumb, even though it no longer has a hole to finger.
I could have been enjoying his nuts.

Hey Tony, I just finished washing my nuts! Thanks!
Only had 5 floaters... Those will go out by the bird feeders for the squirrels if they want them.

Actually, I read that if they float, they are no good. They will be bitter. Edit: I also just read that if they float, they aren't worth cracking because there is little meat in the shell. Either way, it's a simple test since after I got them out of the hulls, they still needed to be washed. I put them in a garbage can, filled it with water from the garden hose, and used an old car washing hose attachment to scrub and beat them clean. I had to change the water multiple times.
Now I just have to dry my nuts properly, and then it will be time for the hardest part. Cracking them!
I have read multiple websites about how to process black walnuts. This instructable had some good info, for anyone wanting the basics.

So when I was "processing" the nuts, one glove got a hole in it. Looks like I'll be sporting a black walnut stained thumb for a week or two. lol"I ask, Sir, what is dinner? It is the whole chicken. To pluck the chicken is the best and most effectual way to prepare them."

I counted my nuts tonight, there's about 380.
Couldn't upload my thumb pic earlier, so here it is now. If I concentrated the black walnut "juice", I could have a really dark stain.Last edited by Pissed Off Patriot; 10-23-2015, 07:22 PM."I ask, Sir, what is dinner? It is the whole chicken. There was one black walnut out of the bunch that looked like it got clipped by a lawnmower blade, and I could see the meat inside. Even though it wasn't properly processed (dried, cured, whatever you want to call it) yet, I cracked it open since the shell integrity was compromised already, and I wanted to taste it for comparison. The nut was still somewhat soft, not crunchy at all, and it tasted mild and sweet, with a slight apple-y flavor. I'm looking forward to trying another one in a week or so to see how the flavor changes!"I ask, Sir, what is dinner? It is the whole chicken.
