Regarding the ammo that is a hard one. It is either hard to find or expensive.
Take a look at gunbroker. http://www.gunbroker.com/All/BI.aspx...=7.7x58&Sort=4
Most folks end up not firing (just collection), reloading or actually converting to 308.
Also check if there is an insert to shoot 7.62x39 like the one for the converted Spanish mausers like those used by the Guardia Civil.
I am not sure in the US... maybe in the practical machinist forum.

Brass and bullets should be available at Grafs and normally they have the budget brass as alternative to the overpriced norma.
Not sure what brass hornady was using in some special runs or where to actually find that one.
If you cannot find the brass you should be able to easily form it from 30-06 or 270 cases.

Grafts has brass and bullets, no worries there. Brass can easily be formed from 30-06 (and I have craploads of that). A little research shows that the type 99 is considered to be one of the finest bolt actions rifles produced. Unfortunately the last ditch guns killed that rreputation.

I know type 99 are strong actions and really attractive to hardcore WWII collectors. Japs were (and are) amazing at any metal work.
It is understandable the late war models were so-so. It happened to everyone as supplies and labor ran low and pressure was up.
Just be careful with 7.7mm surplus... A) it can be dangeroous B) there is a 7.7 that was build for the machine gun but will not run in the type 99 due to having a larger rim.

Thanks AC. I've got the Americans, Russians, Swiss, Germans, Chinese, and now the Japanese....I'd say my WW2 collection is pretty much complete. Time for another war horse shoot at the swamps?

The mail man delivered her to my door this morning. 1944 early production Nagoya Series 7, short ladder rear sight, excellent bore, beautiful wood (WW2 bring back, not an import.....nice). Brass, bullets, and dies are on the way. I found a few sources of commercial ammo but princess andy says I can't purchase booolits on-line any more (fukkker!). Can't wait to build some ammo and get her to the range.
