I don't know bout milk toast, I don't know bout orgs, I don't know bout search engine exposure, i do know that
Papa is correct about "get old quick" theory. i see it as this..if you open the door to that side of things(we all kinda agree to agree we don't want it to become the other place) but if it brings some other people which is what Cg is looking for, then if and when the political threads and posts begin, I won't answer and if all of you don't it goes down the page and away off of "todays posts" page.yet it will be bringing different people in with different ideas that may not be politically posted. It's only if everyone gets wrapped up in the polotics does it become a political place..just like over yonder, in like 1 minute I skip 98% of the threads then come back to here.

Flip side of the coin is this isn't going to last long with 15-20 users posting pics of bikini girls and talking about giving cute names to the owners...

how many days out of the week can you eat milk toast? not meant as a slam but honest criticism.

Sorry man have no idea what you mean by that.

saying the same as you, the breadth of the forum needs to expand. i too skip most of the political bs but it comes into play. over on rimfire central it's pretty much subdued by rules and strict enforcement. members there over time have grown to respect the code in order to be a part of the forum. i think you have to set the tone from the start and enforce it. i think RFC is a good model and if your not a member, join and look up sophia who is a moderator. i think she would give you some good info. i have no idea how you recruit new members effectively and at the same time prune out the unwanted, not sure it's possible. kudos go out to usmc for his bloody head trying to keep the forum alive. first time for me seeing the birth of a forum so at a bit of a loss for direction.

I don't mind civil discourse when it comes to politics. It just takes the right people to make that happen.
I think it can work if we are all careful not to let it get out of control.
Besides, Pa Pa gets what Pa Pa wants.
Politicians are like diapers. They both need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

another hardship this forum or any other ny based forum faces is the whole realm of guns taken out by the safe act. sure puts a damper on a lot of topics and discussion. these are hard times to open a gun shop in ny.

I guess I'm just being selfish, sorry. I do like being able to hang here and talk about guns and other stuff without every other thread descending into some testosterone fueled flame war or seeing 10 new threads a day popping up asking "is an 80% lower legal in NY". OTOH I am not paying the bills to keep the lights on (although I help out when I can).

If we can separate the "Latest updates on legal action filed by SCOPE" type stuff from the "I got into an argument with my buddy about comparing cars to guns", "mothers of small children shouldn't carry a gun in their purse", etc, and every thread pointing out "how stupid liberals are", I think it would work. It will probably require some very heavy-handed moderation initially, and likely more than a few people getting butt-hurt when their thread get locked or comments sent to the trash but eventually those that stick around will get the point and behave. The risk is that you then become known as being a heavily modded forum where people can't speak their minds. If you put up a special "news and politics" section the risk is that 90% of members post there and the remainder of the forum sections go lacking (sound familiar?) Damned if ya do and damned if ya don't......

Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

I have to bend over too far

            I get a boner.

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

That's a lot of my reasoning behind opening the forum up to gun organizations. Anything that helps unhinge unSAFE is good by me and I'd love to get this forum active in that pursuit.

Fair points and definitely in synch with my line of thought on this.

So whats the plan? Dedicated laws and politics section? I don't think it should be mingled with off topic.

The problem at the other site i feel is law and politics come up in each and every post, when its not called for or totally irrelevant. Gets annoying.

However these things are a big part of the climate in NY and perhaps it needs its own place here in the forum? Just my 0.02

Also, don't forget that the promo video is meant to be used as a recruiting tool as well.

Along the lines of what Thughes is saying what if there was a serious section with updates etc but then have a section that reflects the NYSG spirit. In other words make the rules such that any posts must be humorous and witty. Just a thought.
I could be wrong...it's happened before and it'll happen again.

My though was if we had politics then the posts being political have to be positive and proactive in nature. So no complaining but fixing problems. Could also lock it up and make available upon request like suggested before.

The only other alternative I can think of besides what has already been mentioned is to make a dedicated laws and politics section that is closed off like the NSFW section. Invite or request only, and if people start trouble, just revoke their access to that part.

Kind of a weird way to handle it, but it might work.

Personally I'm fine without that stuff here at all, I'll go to NYF if I want to read it, but I understand the purpose it can serve if done right.

I can still find a use for my thumb, even though it no longer has a hole to finger.

I think that would be the right way and thing to do it,I would make it like you said if it gets out of hand it can be locked up and if it need be by request only open back up,I am just hoping we do not see the same thing happen like it did over at NYF where it was basically taken over by politics....
I could probably could get away with a 52 inch shaft but if I could get a 54 inch shaft that would be great as I could always adjust the length of the shaft

It only got bad there when safe act happened and that was the only site for nys on guns so they got filled up with bad people. So if we did do politics I don't think it would get that bad.

Could make rule we are gun enthusiast forum and if politics get out of hand it will just go away.

What I really think would be good for search results and membership is let's recruit new shooters. New shooters bring questions about firearms and creates gun conversations which we do need more of. I love my chit chat too lol.

I find it kinda funny that I mentioned bringing on gun organizations and nobody has mentioned that it might lead to more talk about guns... not just the legal side, shooting sports, gun clubs, etc.
