      The .308 Winchester is the ballistic equivalent of the .30-06 out to about 500 yds. Beyond 500 yds. the .30-06 has the edge. It (.30-06) can handle heavier bullets better as it has more case capacity, about 15% more if my memory serves me...

              My hunting rifle of choice is a Remington 700 in 30-06. Lots of slain deer and other critters with it. Can't go wrong. Having said that my family has a lot of Savage rifles (in small game calibers mostly) and they're pretty sweet rifles too. I would have no problem using a Savage as my go to rifle as needed. My advice is to try them out and see what you like. Just my 2 cents.

                Yeah agreed, my son just bought a traditions deer hunter flintlock. I'm in love... So I think $$ is now a issue, so I'm thinking savage and a flintlock!
