Nothing done with the mosin yet. One reason I have been too busy with work up to the year end.
The other reason is that as much as I like the retro flavor I have been thinking that I could do a better rifle with a number of modern actions like a savage or a remington and add a retro flavor to those.
These mosins look really cool but I would end up with a superior rifle going with a more modern action and also less work.
So I will be thinking about this one for a little longer but this one has a lot of appeal due to the romanticism always surrounding a classic rifle like this mosin.

I think I am going to pass on the Mosin and get something current with a better action yet classic stock with some nice wood.

Idk why but I have had this weird attraction to the .338 lapua mag. Never shot it but I think something in scout size rifle could be fun. Thanks meke, now you have me thinking.

I was thinking that there is absolutely nothing that any larger caliber can do that it cannot be done with the 35 or 375 bores.
I think those are the last calibers where ballistics still make sense, then you jump into some pretty bad ballistics with the 45 and 50 calibers.
The only exception is the .416 with some very limited offerings but then the assortment is so restricted and one pays more for practically the same.

So with the obvious rimless options that are easier to produce and less expensive one needs to rethink the whole idea.

If one wants to hunt a T-rex the RUM in 375 or 358 can take care of that no problems. A scout might be suicidal but something that can be
easily done with a R700 or savage action. A old mosin action cannot take that type of heat even in a smaller case version.
The 284 is another great baseline for a 35 or 375 in a mid size action and might be more reasonable for a lighter scout carbine.

Yet, I still think the 358 federal will serve one well for a life time of hammering game, including the largest game.

I am going to stick to the 358 and 375 but this doesn't mean you should do it.
Lots of options for some of those beaten up mosins.
However even a conversion I would try to keep the classic spirit of the gun and not butcher the whole thing with plastic stocks and raised mounts or pistol grips. No Buba!
