  • No trees? No problem!

I'm a hammock camper. Just to damn old and busted up to be sleeping on the ground anymore so I made the move from ground dweller to tree dweller a couple years back. Now that I'm doing a lot more camping to maximize my motorcycle trip budget, I've found myself having to devise a solution for camping in places that either don't have conveniently placed trees or otherwise pose a dilemma regarding a place to hang the hammock.

My original solution was to carry a tent as well as my hammock. This worked but I hate sleeping on the ground (yes, I have a very nice expensive air mattress but I still hate it). The next solution I tried was to use trekking poles as tent poles and set up my tarp as a shelter, using my hammock on a ground cloth as a bivy under the tarp. Again, this worked but sleeping on the ground sucks. The ideal solution would be a hammock stand but until now there really wasn't an option that was conducive to motorcycle camping.

    Enter the Tensa4 https://www.tensaoutdoor.com/product...order-deposit/

Not cheap but when you consider the cost of a quality 2 man free-standing tent that packs small enough for motorcycle travel, it's in the ball park. It also allows me to use my existing gear (hammock, tarp, ground cloth, etc.). I've been following the folks that have developed this product at hammockforums.net (don't go there unless you're prepared to descend into the rabbit hole that is hammocking!). Packed size is about 20” x 4” x 4”, it weighs 11 pounds and is rated to hold 400 pounds. Yeah, 11 lbs of gear is a bit porky but I'm hauling it on a motorcycle, not packing it on the Appalachian Trail.

It's not as fast as simply hanging my rig between a couple of trees and a requires a bit more fiddling than setting up a tent but the additional set up is offset by the time savings in not having to clean out & wipe down my tent and then fold the tent up neatly enough to get it back in its tent bag.

So far my only complaint is that this rig doesn't allow me to string my hammock as high as I normally like. Rigged up, the sit height of the fully loaded hammock is only @ 12-16", I normally hang so the sit height is @ 2 feet off the ground.

Here's a quick pictorial I put together this afternoon:

    Packed up:

Contents (size 11 shoe for scale):

Stand set up (only the higher end needs to be anchored, I added an anchor at the lower end to stabilize things while I set up my tarp):

Hammock strung up (Dream Hammock Sparrow, for those that are interested):

Tarp installed in storm mode (Chill Gorilla Fortress, doors tied back):

    Tarp in porch mode:

That's quite the setup. About how long does it take you to get everything set? Plan on using this for Perry?

    that's quite minimalist ..
bet you are only carrying maybe 18# for shelter ..??

my friend Robert rode a 250cc Vespa to West Virginia last summer
he did take a hammock, he would like this set-up, but there is so little luggage room on a scooter

    yea, I am aware he's crazy ..
quite a trip for a 75 year old guy

With a bit of practice I believe i can get set-up time for this rig to @ 10-15 minutes. If there's trees available, I can have my tarp up and hammock strung in less than 5 minutes.

From the looks of Google Earth, the campground (just on the other side of the marina from the hotel) has tent camping on the beach and there is a grove of trees right before you get to the beach. So, I'm hoping to set up in the trees but camping on the beach with the new rig wouldn't break my heart either.

BTW: I believe I will take you up on the offer of the shooting cart if that's still open?

Nice packable option, but probably too much for backpacking, it looks perfect for bike packing.

Are the poles connected at the bottom where they cross, or could you slide them apart and more vertical to give you a higher sit height?

Sunset Shore Campground. The tent camping area is at the back of the campground at the end of the dirt road between the back side of the pond and the lake shore. Looks like an expanse of wooded grove and sandy beach. I'm kind of psyched about camping there actually and it's definitely a sore dick deal for $20 night.

You're not going to be packing this thing if you're hiking, 11 pounds in a 20" x 4" x 4" package is a pretty dense chunk of equipment to be lugging on your back. OTOH, a few of these in the trunk when you're car camping will eliminate the need for that gigantic family-sized tent.

All the poles are secured to each other with "soft shackles" (Amsteel cordage) but you can spread/narrow the base and shorten/lengthen the ridge line to adjust length and height for your hammock. I've got it long and low because I have a 12' tarp, I could get the hang quite a bit higher if I went to a 10' tarp and shortened up the ridge line accordingly but I like the particular tarp that I am using.

This looks quite self-defeating....while no hammock camping for me (the Hennessy Asym was so NOT level, I dropped it on the ground and used it as a tent), I use this when Backcountry....

              LINK (amazon)

Just need a typical pad underneath and good to go. Setup in less than a minute. Tear down about twice that. It is less than roomy, but wrapped up into the size to a 1L soda bottle. Keeps bugs & water out; my only concerns.

No need for trees, just a level spot lacking roots etc... I can usually find that.

              Just sayin'

Infantry likes sleeping in the dirt, eh? Hennessy Asym is too small for anybody taller than 5 feet, a 9-10' L x 5-6' W hammock is a whole different ball game!

Yup, finally decided it's time to join the ranks of the Black Coyotes. Think I'll attract any unwanted attention running across I-90 with my rifles and shootin gear strapped on the bike? I should probably swap out the CMP case for a hardshell guitar case to put the gun in.
